When I arrived, Hampshire had on the shelf a half dozen iterations of the case, each missing the mark. So, the president asked me to write it. My version below jump-started a languishing campaign. Many of the words and concepts already existed in the president’s various speeches—they just needed to be woven into a comprehensive argument. After reading this text, colleagues told me that they had heard these themes for years, “and now we know how they all fit together.”
