My development colleagues had created a giving society to establish community among MIT’s highest-capacity donors. Their inspired motif—their symbolism—was the circle of MIT’s iconic dome. When they asked for a “publication” where donors could see their names among their peers, I proposed that we produce an elegant little book of names plus circles from all around campus. This being MIT, our objects included not only beautiful artistic details but also the equally beautiful, necessary stuff of science and engineering: valve, drain, hydrant cap, and more. Plus, of course, the down-to-earth voice of some of the world’s most eminent academics and promising students.
