I wrote this year-in-review for two reasons: 1) to show my colleagues and myself how far we had come and how much farther we had to go, and 2) to motivate donors to be as passionate about this work as we were and support it. Rereading this paper for the first time in years reminded me that the most fulfilling, thrilling jobs I’ve been privileged to hold were at deserving institutions struggling to survive (Northeastern 1991, Hampshire 2015), where the stakes were highest and the work horizon was wide open for experimenting and taking risks.
